Beetle Bagger Japanese Beetle Trap

Every summer here in the Hudson Valley, local gardeners face the same frustrating headache: Japanese beetles arriving in droves to turn prized roses, hibiscus, linden trees, and grapevines into shredded lace. If you are looking for a highly effective, non-chemical way to drastically cut down the beetle population on your property, the Bonide® Beetle Bagger™ Japanese Beetle Trap is an excellent solution.

Pro-Tips from Kent Countryside Nursery:

  • The Golden Rule of Beetle Trapping: Never hang this trap directly inside or right next to the garden beds you are trying to save! Because the pheromone lure is incredibly powerful, placing it next to your roses will actually draw more beetles right to your favorite plants. Instead, hang the trap at least 30 feet away from your prized foliage, ideally downwind on a property line, to lure the pests completely away from your landscape.

  • Watch the Bag Fill: During peak beetle season (usually July and August here in Carmel), check the collection bag every few days. Make sure to replace the disposable bag once it fills up. If dead beetles are left to rot in the bag for too long, the odor will eventually overpower the sweet lure, causing live beetles to avoid the trap.

  • Ideal Height Placement: For the best catch rates, hang your Beetle Bagger roughly 4 feet off the ground on a sturdy shepherd's hook or post in a sunny, open area where the beetles naturally fly.
